Additional Notes

Virginia Dare (b. August 18, 1587):; Virginia Dare, given the name of the land into which she was born (itself named somewhat after and by permission of Queen Elizabeth I), was the first English child born in the New World. Born on Roanoke Island less than a month after the colonists arrived, she also holds the distinction of being the youngest member of the 1587 “Lost” Colony at Roanoke. She was the daughter of Ananais and Eleanor Dare and the granddaughter of John White, the governor of the colony.;
Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, ed. William S. Powell. (Chapel Hill: UNC Press, 1986), s.v. “Dare, Virginia.”
